Choosing an All-Inclusive Resort
Find the right resort for your vacation with practical advice on destinations, beaches, dining, amenities and resort styles.

How to Choose the Right All-Inclusive Resort
1. Start With Your Vacation Style
Quiet and relaxing
Lively/social
Adults-only
Family-friendly
Luxury
Budget/value
Beach-focused
Food-focused
2. What Matters Most?
Quality of the beach
Pools
Food and Γ la carte restaurants
Adults-only areas
Entertainment/nightlife
Room quality
Resort size and walking distances
Distance from airport
Excursions nearby
3. Choose Your Destination: Popular All-Inclusive Destinations
CancΓΊn & Riviera Maya, Mexico β Great for travellers who want lots of resort choices plus things to do off-resort. Think beautiful beaches, cenotes, Mayan ruins, shopping and excursions. CancΓΊn tends to be livelier; Riviera Maya offers more spread-out resort areas.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic β A strong choice for a classic beach-and-resort vacation. It's known for long sandy beaches, large all-inclusive resorts and plenty of options at different price points.
Jamaica β Good for travellers who want beaches plus more local culture and adventure. Popular resort areas include Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios, with waterfalls, rafting, snorkelling and other excursions.
Los Cabos, Mexico β Consider Cabo if you want dramatic scenery, upscale resorts, dining and a more desert-meets-ocean atmosphere. One important difference: many Cabo beaches have strong currents and aren't suitable for swimming, so check the specific resort beach before booking.
4. Find a Resort Style That Fits You **recommended resorts in section below
π΄ Quiet & Romantic
Look at adults-only resorts and smaller properties.
πΉ Lively & Social
Look for larger resorts with entertainment, multiple pools, bars and evening activities.
ποΈ Beach Is the Priority
Research the specific beach, not just the resort photos.
π½οΈ Food Matters Most
Compare the number of Γ la carte restaurants, reservation policies, included premium dining and recent guest feedback.
π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ Family Vacation
Look for kids' clubs, family pools, waterparks, family rooms and age-appropriate activities.
π₯ Upscale Adults-Only
Look at brands/resorts designed around quieter pools, better dining, upgraded service and adult-focused entertainment.
Resort Brands to consider
Which style suits you and your trip? Resort brands are only a starting point. Once you've found two or three brands that match your vacation style, compare the specific resorts. Beach quality, resort size, restaurants, room categories, airport transfer times and atmosphere can vary significantly within the same brand.

π΄ Quiet, Romantic & Adults-Only
Excellence Resorts β’ Secrets Resorts & Spas
Good brands to consider for an adults-only atmosphere focused on relaxation, couples, upgraded dining, and resort-style luxury. Excellence currently operates adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic; Secrets is also positioned as an adults-only, upscale all-inclusive brand.
π₯ Upscale Adults-Only
Excellence β’ Secrets β’ Hyatt Ziva
Start here if you want an adults-only vacation with more emphasis on service, dining, attractive pools and upgraded accommodations. Hyatt specifically distinguishes Zilara as its adults-only all-inclusive brand.
π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ Family-Friendly
Hyatt Ziva β’ Iberostar Selection
Worth exploring for families who want activities, pools, dining choices and amenities for different ages. Hyatt describes Ziva as its all-ages all-inclusive brand, while Iberostar Selection is positioned for vacations with loved ones.
π Lively Adults-Only
Breathless Resorts & Spas
A good brand to investigate if you want adults-only but don't want your vacation to be completely quiet. Hyatt describes Breathless as combining entertainment and relaxation with food, cocktails, spa facilities and a more social atmosphere.
ποΈ Beach-Focused
Iberostar Beachfront Resorts β’ Excellence β’ Secrets
All three are worth researching, but I'd add an important warning: choose the individual resort for its beach, not the brand. Beach conditions can vary enormously even within the same resort company. Iberostar specifically operates a beachfront-focused portfolio, while Excellence and Secrets have numerous Caribbean beachfront properties.
